Overview
Servoy has an officially supported plugin for Jasper Reports that allows you to easily execute reports from within Servoy. SQL is the traditional way of providing data to the reports, but the plugin extends that functionality to foundsets and datasets as well. See the wiki page under “Data Filling Options” for a comparison. While there is a variety of ways to pass in data to the reports, everything after that (bands, grouping, formats, etc) remains the same.
This course will cover the traditional SQL option. When using the SQL option with the Servoy plugin, the first parameter when you run the report is the Servoy server name. That passes through the database connection from Servoy into the Jasper report so it can execute the SQL query. So, to setup and test the SQL reports outside of Servoy, you’ll need to follow the video instructions for setting up the database JDBC connection. Just know that when they run from inside of Servoy with the plugin, that SQL will execute in the context of the database connection name you pass in.
The videos cover a wide range of topics from just getting started, to more advanced topics like cross tab, calculations, and advanced band functionality. The tutorials also use Jasper Reports Server as their example for deploying the reports to end users. Jasper Reports Server has a free community edition, so these report and dashboard options are available for you to use as well. Just keep in mind you might not need it since the built-in plugin provides a lot of the report execution functionality for you. If you’re looking for a way to provide ad-hoc reports or dashboards to your customers, using JasperReports Server might be a benefit for you.
