Thank you for joining me for this video working with databases. For Servoy War University, I'm Bob Cusick. Everything is their voice starts with a database connection. So to see the database connections that are already set up, go to the resources and expand the database servers node. Here you'll see all of the databases that are running. To see the type of database, simply click on the database icon and then down in the bottom you'll see all of the tables that are in that database. To configure the database, simply right click and say open server. Now I'll go ahead and move some of these windows here. I'll go ahead and minimize this one so we can get a better view. There we go. So there are certain properties about every database connection. The server name, the username and password, the URL for the connection string, which driver to use and some databases require you to have a catalog and or a schema. So in this example, we can see that the example data connection is pointing to a postgres database. Starting with Sir Voice 5.2, the default database that shipped with Sir Voice is Postgres. Whereas previous versions, it was Cybase ASA. This change was made because Sir Voice got open source, starting with version 5.2. In previous versions of Sir Voice, to manage the databases, you had to download Cybase Central, which is a free tool from Cybase. To administer the postgres databases, you can also go ahead and download a free tool. That tool is called PG Admin. And you can get it at www.pgadmin.org slash download. And here you can see that there are various versions for any platform that you happen to be running. So for Windows, simply click the download link. And here you can download the zip file, which has an installer. Once you've installed the PG Admin tool, you'll see sort of a blank screen. To get started with PG Admin, simply click the plug icon. This will create a new connection. You can give it any name that you want. I'm going to call mine Sir Voice. Your host will be local host. Then simply fill in the username and the password. The username is DBA in all caps. And the password is SQL, again in all caps. And then click OK. Now you'll see that there's a node added to the top called Sir Voice. Simply click on it. And you'll see a plus icon. Expand the plus icon. And you can see that there are eight databases. From there, it's simply a matter of drilling into the database list. And now we see that little red X, that just means that we're not connected to that particular database. To connect to that database, simply click on it. So for our example data, I can click on it. Go down to schemas. Go down to public. And go down to tables. And here we can see the 13 tables that are there. From here, I can do things like add columns. I can add new tables. But I can also do those things in Sir Voice. Well, we'll be taking a look at how to do it. I can look at how to do those things in an upcoming video. For now, just know that there's a free comprehensive tool called PG admin that you can use to administer your Postgres databases. To create a new empty database, let's go ahead and collapse example. Simply go up to databases, right click, and say new database. Give the database a name. I'm going to call this one Bob test. And make sure that you choose the owner. And the owner is DBA. And that's all there is to it. Click OK. And now we have our Bob test database. So we can just simply click on it. Now we're connected to the Bob test database. To make a connection to this new empty database in Sir Voice Developer, it's really easy. In Sir Voice Developer, simply go to database servers and right click. choose new server, Postgres SQL. And now a new connection will be made for you. So here you can just type in the name, which will be Bob test. The username, again, it's DBA, all caps. The password is SQL, all caps. And then here where it says database name, simply replace this bracket database name with the physical name of your database. In this case, it's Bob test. Everything else has been chosen for you. Now it's just a simple matter of saving the connection. So click the Save button or Control-S. If you get no errors, then you have a successful connection. And now I have in my list of database servers, Bob test. Now you don't have to just connect to Postgres databases. That's the cool thing about Sir Voice. You can use any kind of database that you have. It can be SQL Server. It can be MySQL. It can be Oracle. It can be Cybase. Just about any SQL database with a JDBC driver, you can make a connection to. So for example, if you had a MySQL database, it was already running someplace either on your local machine, on your local area network, or even in the cloud, you can very easily connect to that. But you have to make sure that you have the right driver installed. So to do that, go to your Sir Voice installation directory. In my case, I just installed it on the top level of my C drive. Double-click it, open up the application server, and go into the drivers folder. These are listed as drivers that get installed by default with Sir Voice. If you notice, there's no MySQL driver here. The MySQL JDBC driver is part of the GPL license. So by law, Sir Voice can't bungled in their installation. You have to go and download it yourself. But it's pretty easy. Once you have it downloaded, go ahead and extract it and take this one jar file. In my case, I'm just going to copy it. I'm going to go back to my Sir Voice installation directory under the application server and go to the drivers folder. And now I'm going to paste it. There we go. So now the MySQL driver is installed in Sir Voice. However, we need to restart Sir Voice so that it's aware of the driver. Back in Sir Voice developer, simply go to the file menu and choose restart. Once the word developer restarts, the JDBC driver has been loaded. So now we can go to database servers, right-click, say new server, and add MySQL. Here we can give it a name. I happen to have a small test database called tester. So we'll call this one tester, username root. And the database name is tester. And again, we're going to click save. And again, it was successfully connected. If you get an error, it's probably because you don't have the JDBC driver installed. Now let's talk about a very important connection called the repository server. This is sort of a holdover from previous versions of Sir Voice where everything about your solution was stored inside of the Sir Voice repository database. Starting with version 4.0, the repository server became a team sharing repository. So to see the details about the repository server, double-click it. And you can see that by default, it's a post-gres database. But again, if you didn't want to use post-gres, you can use whatever you want. So what we're going to do is we're going to change the repository server from a post-gres database to a MySQL database. It's very easy to do. The first thing that we're going to do is close this connection and we're going to simply delete the server. Next we're going to make sure that we have an empty database set up in MySQL. I've already set one up that's called servoy repository. So I'm going to come over here to database servers, new server, MySQL. And the name is very important. It must be called repository server. Go ahead and enter your username and your password. Put in the database name, minus called servoy repository. And then click save. And that's all there is to it. So you need to do one more thing when you create a new repository server. And that's restart the servoy developer. Because so what will automatically create the necessary tables for you automatically? So again, go up to file and click restart. Well, that's the basics of dealing with database connections in servoy. Just remember that you can connect to anything that you have a driver for. I hope you've enjoyed this video.
