Thank you for joining me for this short video on charting beans. Servoy University I'm Bob Cusick. There are a number of different beans that ship a servoy, and probably the ones that you'll use the most often are the built-in charting beans. The charting beans work both in the smart client and the web client, and it demonstrated a couple of different styles. I have a pie chart, a parallel chart, and a stack chart. So we'll go ahead and press the chart data button so we can see examples of each kind of chart. Here I've run a simple SQL query against the customers table of the example data connection that totals up the number of customers in each of the list countries. And then we took that data set and passed it to the pie chart, the parallel chart, and the stack chart. As you can see, both the browser and the smart client look the same. And in fact, servoy's versions of these charting beans will actually take a GIF image and display it in the browser. Now let's go back to the developer and have a look at the code behind it. To place your beans on your form, use the little place beans icon, and then scroll all the way down to the bottom. The beans I placed on my form are the parallel chart, the pie chart, and the stack chart. As you can see, there's other choices as well. Now let's have a look at the code behind the chart data button. At the very top here, I'm doing my SQL query that does a group buy and an order buy, where the customer's country is in any one of those options listed in the arguments. Down in line 20, we actually execute the query and get back the data set. And in lines 24 and 25, we actually get the column as an array, one for values and one for cities. And then we set a couple of properties on the chart beans themselves. So on the stack chart bean, we turn off the grid lines and same thing on the parallel chart bean. Then we simply loop through the rows and we set the values and the legends of the pie chart. And we simply set the values for the parallel chart and the stack chart. Over here, in the elements, you can see my three named charts. I filled out the name properties, so they show up here in the elements. Each one of these named beans has a set of functions and properties that you can use to programmatically set the data and the labels. These are Java beans. You can actually see the hierarchy all the way down from the component to the container that it's based on to the component that that container is based on. And you can use all of these properties and functions within your code. However, everything that you need generally is under the top level, which is the chart level. Now each one of these beans has the same chart object. So it has all the same properties and all the same functions. So it's really easy. to understand how to do one of them. You'll know how to do the others automatically. Now you're not limited to just using the beans that come with Sir Boy. You can use other third party charting beans as well. One of them is easy charts that you can get an object planet.com slash easy charts. Although this is not a free bean, it has lots of different styles and lots of different graphics that you can apply to them to give it 3D depths, scatter plots, etc. Another popular bean for use with Sir Boy is by elegant J. And it's elegant J charting means. And so you can get that at elegantj charts.com. And these have also a wide variety of different kinds of graphs. You can do thermometers, engages, and exploded pie charts and lots, lots more. There's another option that works equally well on the web and the smart client. And that is free using the Google chart API. And the Google chart API simply takes a formatted string of data, one formatted string, and you can use the HTTP plugin to send it out to Google. And it will give you back a PNG image that you can then display or store in your database. You do have a need a live internet connection for your client, but you'll have one in most cases anyway. So as you can see, there are lots of different options for charting inside of Sir Boy. I hope you've enjoyed this tutorial. Thanks for watching.
